Að vera — To be

Að vera means “to be.” In the present tense it has just five forms — er, ert, erum, eruð, eru — and the one you need depends on who or what the sentence is about. Read the chart, practise it, then use it in real sentences.

How to read it
- There are 11 pronoun rows but only five different verb forms.
- Icelandic separates þú (you, one person) from þið (you, more than one person).
- Hán refers to one person and takes er, even though English translates it as “they are.”
- Þau, þær and þeir all take eru.
- Pronouns can stand for things, following the noun's grammatical gender — hann and hún are not only for people.
